What to Wear for Your Portrait Session

The night before a session, almost everyone texts me the same thing: “I have no idea what to wear.” Good. That means you care. Here is how I think about it, after years of photographing people across San Jose and the Bay Area.

Dress like the best version of a normal day

The goal is not a costume. It is you, turned up a little. If you feel like a stranger in what you are wearing, the camera sees it instantly. Pick pieces you already love and reach for on the days you feel good.

Bring options, not a uniform

Bring two or three looks. One that feels safe, one that feels a little bold, and one wild card. We do not have to use them all, but having choices lets us find the one that clicks once we are rolling.

A few things that photograph beautifully

  • Solid colors and simple textures. They keep the attention on your face.
  • Clothes that fit well right now. Tailored beats trendy every time.
  • Layers. A jacket, a scarf, or a change of top gives us variety in one session.

A few things to skip

  • Busy logos and tiny patterns, which fight for attention and date quickly.
  • Anything brand new that you have not moved around in yet.
  • Shoes you cannot walk or sit in comfortably, if we are shooting on location.

The real secret

The best outfit is the one you stop thinking about the moment we start. When you are not managing your clothes, you are just present, and present is where every good portrait lives.

Have a specific look in mind? Tell me when you reach out and we will plan it together before you ever step in front of the lens.
